REMOVE

==========================

Greetings -- as you should be aware from the content of these messages, SGVLUG's e-mail system has changed. There are now some new ways to get yourself removed from this list that you may not be aware of. First of all, there is a web-based management form located at this link:

    http://www.sgvlug.net/mailman/listinfo/sgvlug

Note that you will need your password to make the changes (otherwise anyone could unsubscribe everyone, or at least try to) Since we migrated everyone from the previous list, these passwords were generated randomly and you should have received a message with your particular password. This was easy to overlook [I did, in fact] but easy to rectify -- on that page is a field you can use to get a "reminder" sent to you, and then you can connect and remove yourself. Some other neat features you can control from this interface is setting "on vacation" mode (so that you won't get messagse while away, but won't have to re-subscribe when you get back) as well as an option for "digest mode" -- you get only one e-mail containing all messages sent that day (but if you do this, PLEASE take care to make sure you edit the subject line on responses as well as trimming any un-related text -- in the first case, the subject will clearly indicate it is a digest, and anyone who would be able to help will likely ignore the message; in the second case, if you do a "me too" posting and leave the entire digest intact, it WILL appear, in it's entirety, in the next message you receive (a.k.a. "FEEDBACK") )

Another "new feature" (as far as this list is concerned) is the addition of several headers to the e-mail message. Most clients hide these details, but any client worth it's salt can show them on demand (the really good ones will act on these automatically and provide them as direct links or buttons for the user). These new headers are:

List-Id: "SGVLUG Discussion List." <sgvlug.sgvlug.net>
List-Unsubscribe: <http://www.sgvlug.net/mailman/listinfo/sgvlug>,
                  <mailto:sgvlug-request at sgvlug.net?subject=unsubscribe>
List-Archive: <http://vorean.sgvlug.org/pipermail/sgvlug>
List-Post: <mailto:sgvlug at sgvlug.net>
List-Help: <mailto:sgvlug-request at sgvlug.net?subject=help>
List-Subscribe: <http://www.sgvlug.net/mailman/listinfo/sgvlug>,
                <mailto:sgvlug-request at sgvlug.net?subject=subscribe>

note that the unsubscribe information gives two options: the first is the web link I mentioned above, the second is to send a message to svlug-REQUEST at sgvlug.net -- not the list itself, which is just "sgvlug" at sgvlug.net. Also, you need to use the word "unsubscribe" in the subject, not "remove". For your purposes, you should be able to click the link as shown here and your system should take care of the rest.

Note that in either case, you WILL receive another message -- this one will be from the list manager PROGRAM (not a human) asking you to confirm your intention to leave the list. This message contains both a very long random string which must be returned as another message and a specifically-coded web-link that will do the same thing. Since lots of spam includes (often bogus) "unsubscribe" information that looks the same, you may have a spam filter that inadvertently traps these confirmation messages, which of course makes it difficult to complete the process.

(BTW: As I look at those headers, I do see that something isn't entirely configured correctly (yet) -- the "archive" is at http://www.sgvlug.net/pipermail/sgvlug/ -- "vorean" is the internal name of the system, i.e., the name used on the INSIDE of the network where this system resides)
