The magic of wiki's is there is no such thing as controlled access.

Actually, that depends on the settings that you choose for the wiki. So the 
magic is even bigger than you descibe. You can allow write access for all or 
just for registered users, and allow self-registration or registration just 
by an administrator. Write access could be add or edit, and be different for 
different pages.
