as dustin said, defining the goals will pretty much dictate your  
distro. having your *mentor(s)* distro certainly helps.

i use libranet. easy install, great admin menu, debian based. there  
is a free version, but i pay for mine which gives me email support.  
libranet also has a forum for all to search and use. i believe i can  
redistribute this version, however only the original registered  
person gets email support.

libranet has been going through some difficult times as one of the  
founders has died, but i would still recommend it to a beginner.
