You might try the Canon PowerShot S series. They are similar to the
PowerShot A Series in that they use AA batteries but they also have longer
zooms. I bought the S1IS (with image stabilization) about a year ago and am
very happy with it. It's got a nice grip built in and is one that my wife
feels comfortable using. While it's a good family camera, it also has manual
controls, takes 30 fps AVIs and is just a good camera. 

Since I bought mine they have come out with an S2IS version which has a 12x
zoom (from 10x), 5 mega-pixels (from 3.2) and a 1.8 inch LCD (from 1.5). The
new S2 sells from about $460 and you can find the S1 for about $240.
