1. I don't know what I'm doing.

2. Previously I went to the Networking section and activated the modem
configuration for what used to be called com port one.
Then I went to something called "KPPP" and set up a dial-up account and
dialed out normally.

I upgraded from Fedora C4 to Core 5. 
"KPPP" is no longer present. 
So I attempted to connect without KPPP through the network section
alone.

Surprise, I no longer need to hear the modem dialing out, it simply
connects like a network or DSL connection, no delay.

What was I doing wrong/right in the past?
