Even in plain Ubuntu (without the "Ed-"), such questions arise.  A
friend was given a Ubuntu 6.06 LTS [Long Term Support] CD, and I
wanted to download the same .iso so I could better help him.  Turns
out there are three variants, "desktop", "server", and "alternate".
Not knowing immediately which my friend had, I downloaded desktop and
alternate.

They are indeed different.  alternate seems to be designed for
flexibility of installation schemes, has a large installation
documentation subdirectory, and a full pool of Debian packages, none
of which appear in the desktop version, unless perhaps inside the
squashed file system, which the desktop version has but the alternate
doesn't.  (I haven't seen inside the squashed file system yet.)
