I'm in the same boat. I have been checking out Dish. I understand that
their files are on Linux but encrypted so must be played from Dish PVR.
There are options (ie DishRip) to capture streaming video into PC.
With this in mind, today I got a NAS which holds 2 PATA drives at Frys
Manhattan Beach for $30. The salesman said they are clearing out
everything related to PATA. They only sell SATA drives now.

Subject: [SGVLUG] Myth TV HD and Satillite TV
Hi!
So, I'm wonder how much one can
expect to spend, and what is needed
to record HD TV from Satellite?
( direct TV )
do I need a special TV tuner card?
thanks
matti
ps - slickdeals.net posted a basic
dell system for $360 which may make
for a decent start.. however I was
hoping for a cheaper starting point..
btw - I noticed that Tivo doesn't
support HD Satellite.
