The right answer for him depends on his goals.  If he is looking for a
certificate that will get him hired that requires a very different answer to
that if he wants to learn Linux.

When I am interviewing someone and they present a certificate I know they
have heard the theory once and that may be all.  When I look a perspective
employee in the eye and ask them about their experience and they tell me
that they are an active member of the community and have installed a number
of releases on a number of platforms I know they would be able to do the
basics of the job at an entry level.  I would not expect them to grok
security or networking concerns off the bat, but would expect them to be
able to figure out how to fix any given problem given some research time.
