It may create the file with .eml extension which is associated with
Outlook Express. This can be changed from Windows Explorer or My
Computer:
Tools>Folder Options>File Types
Scroll down to EMF extension & change to Open With Thunderbird

[warning: windows content...]

Greetings - One of the ladies that works with the genealogical library
sent the following message to me - I have some thoughts on it, but
wanted some consensus from others before I responded - any gurus around
here?

I don't know if any of you can help me, but I'm getting a little
desperate.

I was just scanning a document in my HP printer/scanner and told it to
attach it to an e-mail. It scanned and then sent it to Outlook Express.
It has never done this before. It has always gone to my Thunderbird
e-mail program where I can choose to send it in either of my two e-mail
addresses there. I have tried to delete Outlook Express to no avail.
When I opened it to see if I could disable it, it proceded to download
my e-mail!

I have checked my Earthlink options and Earthlink is checked as my
default e-mail and yet every time I scan this article, it puts it into
Outlook Express. Naturally I can't send it because I have no outgoing
mail with OE.

Have any of you an idea of what's going on and how OE has stolen my
scanning/e-mailing capability. Virg is puzzled and cannot help.

I'm about to shoot Bill Gates!

And today a followup [actually, I missed the original - the followup
prompted me to send this...]

I am unable to determine which of the June Microsoft updates caused the
e-mail hijacking. They all say about the same thing - no details. The
problem is that when I scan to e-mail, it goes to Microsoft Outlook
which I don't use. It has always gone to Thunderbird which is my
default e-mail program.

Virg tried to go in and delete Outlook, and it would re-appear in about
5 seconds.

So, I need to be able to either 1) get rid of Outlook , or 2) to find
out which update caused this problem to arise and undo that update. Not
being able to scan directly to e-mail is a big problem with all my
research, etc. As you may recall, Betty Jones is having the exact same
problem.

Any ideas?

Fran

p.s. As an added frustration, today I found that Mozy has also not
successfully backed-up my computer in a month. It says it's getting a
firewall error. But, Mozy is permitted in my list. So, while I was
feeling good about having this off-site backup, now I find that for the
last month, nothing has been saved!

So, that's the background - I suspect that, as she pointed out, "one of
the updates" from microsoft has reset the "default mail client" setting
so that it is now outlook (express). I see in the thunderbird settings
page there is an option for "always check if thunderbird is the default"
and a "check now" button - I imagine that will solve her immediate
problem (any ideas on the firewall problem though?)
