It does drain the battery. On the Android there is a nice utility
that reads your phone logs and prints out a nice shiny pie chart of
what used your battery today.
Mine is:
55% display light
17% cellular network
22% wifi network
6% cpu
Numbers are approximate as I interpreted the readout liberally. I was
doing a lot of WiFi web browsing in a bad cellular area.
