Hello Claude - to answer your questions to me originally, I still have 384k sync (up and down) for the same reason as you (static IP and a specific clause in their TOS that allows me to "run a server")  A few weeks back I was cold-called to "upgrade" to u-verse, and I specifically asked them if they provided a static IP - she had to ask someone, but did come back and say "yes, that is included" - I'm not really holding my breath, but it does sound like a step in the right direction.  (also, while talking to the cold-caller, I mentioned I wasn't interested in the "other" features, so I was told I needed to shop online for it as she could only sell me a "bundle", but it was available separately.)

For a while I was without phone service at all [good with the bad - I was "on" the internet too much anyway, so this provided a nice break - besides, the only people that called ME were telemarketers...]  turns out they had replaced the local "green box" with a new "beige box" about 50 yards farther away [but still close enough I could hit it with a strong throw - it's downhill :) ]  and when they did, they forgot to connect my line (or else the connection was "loose" and finally fell off)  In any case, that new "beige" box is, of course, fiber; the last couple hundred yards is likely copper, but maybe they could run fiber as well (not sure what the reqs are at that distance)

since my "modem" is the old "alcatel 1000", which apparently is a piece of crap (though it works fine for me), if I "upgrade" I'll probably be given a new modem (and, as someone pointed out, probably be forced into ppoe or similar)  Does anyone know what the actual "top speed" for the alcatel is?  maybe I can convince them to simply upgrade the existing connection if it will work...

So does that mean you can never connect to your own machine from outside with TimeWarner cable?  When they change the IP address, doesn't that mess up any existing connections to the outside world?  I typically ssh in to work for hours at a time so I can monitor a build or a test so wouldn't that break my connection?

As for your DSL service, did you select that tier for the 6mb/768kb speed or the 7 static ip's or the english support?  Is english support a specific offer or a requirement?  I mean whenever I've called for support they person on the other end had an accent but it was english.

I've been a long time happy customer of Pacbell/SBC/AT&T's DSL service since '99 but I think it's time to upgrade.  I'm paying $25/mo for 1.5 Mbs down and 384 Kbs up but I have one of those original accounts with a static IP and no restrictions on hosting so I've been trying to hold off on making any changes.

I looked at AT&T's U-verse Internet (their version of fiber) but if I'm reading their web pages correctly, I can't order it unless I order it with their TV service which doesn't sound all that good compared to what I have now with my TiVo's and TimeWarner cable.  A big show stopper is that their IPTV is not compatible with my HD TiVo so I'd have to use their DVR's which aren't very mature.  I'd be giving up many features I have now so why would I want to pay more for less?  Now if it is possible to order just their U-verse Internet w/o TV, does anyone know what the installation is like?  I have a detached garage but there's a concrete patio/walkway between the garage the house.  Don't really have room in the house either so the only place available is outside at the demarc.  Can they install it there assuming I run power to the area?

Now apparently AT&T has a promo right now (I think it ends July) were you can order any of their DSL tiers for only $25/mo for the first year (then it goes up to who knows what) so I could upgrade to either 3 Mbs or possibly 6 Mbs but is it worth giving up my static IP?

As for cable, is it a myth about sharing the bandwidth with everyone in the neighborhood?  I've pretty much had consistent speeds with DSL.

I'm familiar with dynamic DNS services.  I've been using dyndns.org<http://dyndns.org> to map my static IP but don't have any first hand experience with dynamic IP's.  How often do they change?  I assume there's a Linux client available for monitoring changes and pushing updates out to dyndns.org<http://dyndns.org>?

Tom, did you ever switch or do you still have the same service?  Anyone else?
