Well if you are really set on DIY and you have a spare arduino, you an
pick up a couple of DS18S20 (or is it B now?) 1-wire temperature
sensors and string around with CAT-3 or CAT-5 cable. I've got about 7
strung around the house and attic and if I ever find time I'll run a
few more. You should be able to find them for between $2 and $5.
Parasitic power is usually fine for the first few as long as you have
a single run - don't do a star network unless you plan to add
switches!
