hey all, here's the little note you can keep by your computer for 
whenever it freezes up:

hold alt, print screen and then
(R)aising
(E)lephants
(I)s
(S)o
(U)tterly
(B)oring

or alternatively echo them to /proc/sysrq-trigger, ie
echo "r" > /proc/sysrq-trigger

Just a handy little trick that'll keep you from losing data :)
