Think of sniffing packets over radio waves like being connected to a hub.
The wifi hardware must allow promiscuous mode otherwise it only listens to
packets designated to it's mac address.  The hardware must also be capable
to receive the same time of wifi network such as 802.3b or n or variations
of such.  If the traffic is not encrypted then it is most likely in clear
text such as telnet.  Hope that helps.
