If you're open to virtual, why not run Xen Linux? No pricey VMWare. If
you use vt-x hardware as Carlos suggests (Intel or AMD), you can let
them bring up Windows in a virtual machine. For those whose minds are
already "mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration" (Dijkstra), you
can even arrange that the machine boots straight into virtual Windows
under Xen.
Too bad you're restricted to laptops. Last month I bought an HP/Compaq
6005 desktop refurbished from Overstock (because they accept bitcoin)
for $170. Athlon II with x86-64 instruction set, 8 GB main, 1 TB disk.
